Solo
On July 20, 2022, the "Flying Childhood" - Chen Zequan's art works exhibition, organized by Xiamen Art Museum and Xiamen Xinmeng Art Research Institute, and undertaken by Mocean art, is opened in Xiamen Art Museum. This exhibition was initiated by Professor Lin Chun of the Department of art of Xiamen University, and curated by teacher Chen Yali of Xiamen Academy of Arts and crafts of Fuzhou University. The Xiamen Academy of Arts and crafts Fuzhou University Prof. Zheng Qimiao, who is chairman of Fujian watercolor Association; the chairman of Fujian Sculpture Society Fu Xinmin; the director of Xiamen Culture and Tourism Bureau Ye Xizhi; the Xiamen Academy of Arts and crafts Fuzhou University Prof. Li Jinxian; the director of Xiamen Art Museum Chen Xin, as well as relatives, friends and people from all walks of life etc. attended the opening ceremony. The 38 medium and large-scale oil paintings and acrylic paintings are exhibited in the exhibition halls B and C of Xiamen Art Museum. These works have been created by Chen Zequan since 2017.
Chen Zequan, was born in Xiamen, Fujian Province in 2010, is 11 years old and naturally loves painting. He has been exposed to oil painting and acrylic painting since 2016, and has completed nearly 500 works so far. In the process of creation, the tools he uses are very casual, including industrial brushes, sticks, scrapers, tape measures, boards, and even his own hands can be used as painting tools; By pouring, dripping, scraping, rubbing, squeezing, sprinkling, especially hitting, the picture shows a lot of "action".
Chen Zequan found his own expression language in continuous painting practice and exploration. From his paintings after 2019, we can vaguely feel the shadow of the picture being hit by props and the sense of power. In 2021 his hitting art is more obvious and based on forming, presenting the energy and movement of life on the canvas in a visual way. The combination of speed, strength and emotion makes painting produce more possible language.
Summary of art Review:
Preschool children's painting is pure and simple, doodle boldly. Can this kind of painting be taught? Can it be learned? Can it be appreciated? The first two are absolutely impossible, but the third is feasible. Looking at children's paintings is to awaken your childhood pleasure. In fact, you are looking at yourself.
When the morning light appeared, it was like a scorching sun.
The trembling earth is steaming with heat.
How can the first bloom of tender leaves and delicate flowers be so majestic?!

We can find Pollock's sprinkling and Richter's scraping from his paintings, but it comes from spontaneity rather than learning. If it was learned from others, the integrity of the paintings would not be so strong for people of his age. Different from traditional painting, one of the biggest characteristics of modern painting is directness and flatness.
So I appreciate Chen Zequan's father very much. He gave his son the greatest autonomy and the strongest spiritual support to let him grow up freely. What he drew was not what his father wanted him to draw, nor was it what the art teacher taught him. Going to his studio and seeing such a large amount of painting, you will know that this child spends almost all his spare time and energy on it. Why? I guess it's because of happiness.

I have never seen a young artist with more focus and ambition. To start and finish such large canvases takes stamina and the ability to remain at a place in emotion and time. For any person in any profession this focus separates hobbyists from professionals. Artist Zequan has this ability.
My personal preference is for the canvases that are completely covered. I can get lost in the painting with no sense of a painter covering a canvas. The canvas, the paint, the tools, the hitting all dissolve into a pure emotional experience for me as the viewer.

Zequan is certainly an Action Painter at this stage of his life. His paintings have raw enthusiasm as it is clear he delights in what he is observing unfold. From watching videos of Zequan’s painting process, he creates at an intersection between a meditation-like focus and a school yard activity. He paints as if it is a game to be won. He has the patience to usher his canvases to completion with the artistic sensibility to stop. He uses color and paint texture informed by his movements. Zequan is a very talented young artist who shows enormous capability.
I personally feel that creating art as a young person aid in the development of the brain. Art making is decision making. The more one goes through this process, the stronger ones thinking abilities become. I love the sheer joy in Zequan’s art knowing that it is leading him to a bright future ahead.
